Nichole Marsh has updated the global coccolithophore calcification rate measurement database. This was published on the PANGAEA data publisher for earth and environmental science in December 2025 (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.987673).
This database includes in-situ experimental data from 47 expeditions, spanning 35 years. There are over 3000 calcium carbonate and primary production rate data and nearly 18,000 ancillary data points all meticulously matched via depth and niskin bottle numbers. Ancillary data includes cell counts, chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients, carbonate chemistry, total pH, salinity and temperature.
This database expands the Poulton et al., 2018 (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.888182) database of pelagic calcium carbonate (CP) rate measurements from isotopic tracer uptake in incubated discrete water samples, as discussed in Daniels et al., 2018 (doi:10.5194/essd-10-1859-2018). This new database expands the number of calcium carbonate and primary production rate data and adds for the first time ancillary data.
Nichole started out compiling this dataset as part of her MSc. project, and then continued this as part of the OceanICU Project into the published database that is being utilised for machine learning and global modelling applications.
